The Bay of Islands

This past Easter, V and I took a trip to Victoria to, among other things, take a leisurely drive down the Great Ocean Road. Offically designated the B100, it starts south of Geelong at Torquay and winds approximately 250 kilometres southward, ending about 40km before of Warrnambool. The road almost entirely winds along the stunning coastline, interrupted only by a few kilometres by the national park at Cape Otway, where the road goes inland.

Along the way, you’ll pass through Anglesea (near the reknowned Bells Beach), Lorne, Apollo Bay and then to Port Campbell. Port Cambpell itself is a small town bustling with tourism: firstly, it has a beautiful beach and secondly, it is the perfect point to kick off exploring the amazing limestone/standstone rock formations nearby. To the west, there is The Bay of Martyrs, The Bay of Islands, London Bridge, The Arch and the Grotto. To the east, there is Loch Ard Gorge and the Twelve Apostles.

We took our time driving the Great Ocean Road, stopping to take in the sights, take a hike or slowly drive through a town. Thankfully, the clouds parted for us this weekend making for truly magnificent views. I’ve tried capturing the sights by sticthing some panoramas together.

Secluded Beach

Highly recommend the GOR. It’s a leisurely drive presenting stunning views. For time and budget constraints, return day trips are also available from Melbourne CBD.
