It was an unlikely surprise that B and I happily ended up at Four Ate Five last Saturday for lunch.
Having gone for a massive run, I needed food immediately. Perhaps it was weakness from hunger or a misplaced egalitarianism that had overtaken me but I had ceded brunch plan making to him. I mean it was rightly his turn to pick and I trust his opinion but just maybe I should just grab the closest nourishment I could get. He suggests a mystery establishment whose name he can’t recall in Surry Hills. I place my faith in his description of some cafe that is consistently swarmed with patrons waiting for a table. We head to Crown Street.
I start to question my faith a couple of blocks south of Oxford Street. “Hang on, we’ll be there soon,” he insists, vaguely.
shouldn’t was utterly wrong to have worried because he knows exactly what he’s doing: He’s taken me to the lauded Four Ate Five.
There’s a lot of people waiting for a table but apparently they’ve all come in groups larger than two. We luck out and the two of us get a table immediately.
I immediately find the first slow cooked item on the menu (the Pulled Pork on Sourdough) but an order of Smoked Salmon and Avocado, served on organic sourdough with ricotta, fresh parsley & two poached eggs, arrives at the adjacent table and I have to have it. My ravenous appetite was sated.
B has the Spicy Italian meatball 3 cheese melt on sourdough with rocket and olive oil. Incredibly tasty. Total food envy.
I can totally see why there were so many people prepared to wait to have a meal here. The pulled pork will have to wait til the next time… hopefully when I’m not so famished!
The word? Instantly one of my new favourites, even if only going by their decadent melts and open-faced sandwiches. Service was friendly but food took some time, likely due to how busy they are. Not unreasonably priced. Will definitely be back to sample the rest of the menu.
